International disaster-relief charity ShelterBox has launched “Big Green Box”, a week of educational activities running from 18 to 25 May 2009, the highlight of which will be a 3D artwork depicting a disaster zone in London’s Victoria Station.

The aim of the campaign is to highlight the challenges of delivering shelter to major disaster areas. The charity specialises in emergency shelter and cooking materials for victims of conflict or natural disaster. ShelterBox supplies are delivered in big green boxes, lending the campaign its name.

Across the country, Rotary Clubs and Scout groups are holding fundraising events to coincide with the campaign, including sponsored camping, climbing and balloon races. Schools will be encouraged to allow their students to wear something green for a day.

“The ultimate goal of the campaign is to help more people who have lost everything because of a disaster, but to do this we need to create awareness of what we do and encourage the public to donate money, ” says ShelterBox founder and CEO Tom Henderson.

The charity has also launched a celebrity cookbook with contributors such as chef Antony Worrel-Thompson. A PDF of the book is downloadable from the ShelterBox website where supporters are encouraged to ask friends coming for dinner parties to make a donation to ShelterBox instead of bringing wine.

London Scouts will take part in a Scavenger hunt culminating at London’s Victoria Station on Saturday 23 May, where SAS Pavement Artists will be recreating a natural disaster on the main concourse.

“We want the campaign to showcase what we do and encourage more people to help us. Already, through the activities taking place this week we have engaged with new people who weren’t even aware of the charity’s existence, so it’s already proving its worth,” says Henderson.
