Former marketer appointed to ASA Council

31 July 2009

Former Argos marketing director John Mayhead has been appointed to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) Council.

Mayhead will sit on the broadcast and non-broadcast councils, the bodies responsible for adjudicating on advertising complaints. His role will commence from 1 August 2009, replacing Susan Murray who has worked on the ASA Council for the maximum six-year term.

Mayhead says he accepted the role as it is as a good way to contribute to the marketing industry positively: “I have been dealing with advertising matters for all of my career as part of my marketing responsibilities,” he says. “I hope to maintain a high standard of ASA judgments. I see this as vitally important in order to uphold the standard of advertising we have in this country. We have a strong and vibrant industry and I am keen it should remain so, held in the highest regard by consumers and government.”

ASA chairman Lord Smith says Mayhead is an ideal candidate to provide an expert marketer’s perspective. "His marketing insights will contribute positively to the work of the ASA Council in making fair and proportionate decisions that protect consumers while maintaining advertising freedoms."

Mayhead has a background in consumer marketing, having worked for Cadbury Schweppes before joining Argos where he was marketing director.

He is currently a non-executive chairman of the Audit Bureau of Circulations, the industry body responsible for measuring newspaper and magazine circulation and website traffic. He also chairs the Government Strategic Marketing Advisory Board, which is responsible for the oversight of all government marketing activity.

Mayhead has been a member of the Incorporated Society of British Advertisers (ISBA) Executive Committee, Chairman of The Marketing Society and the Director of the Centre for Marketing at the London Business School. In 2005 he was awarded a CBE in the 2005 Queen’s birthday honours list.
