On your marks...

Marketers have long known that consumers love quick spontaneous purchases – even more so when there’s a bargain involved. Businesses have started to tap into the appeal of now‑or‑never commerce. Swedish retailer Papercut has offered speed sales on a variety of books and DVDs that only last four seconds online. Groupon has launched a pilot called Groupon Now in Chicago. This new initiative allows customers to view real-time deals offered by local businesses. Each deal only lasts a few hours, so customers must buy quickly. Fashion giant Burberry has also launched the Burberry Retail Theatre to showcase its spring-summer 2011 collection, inviting customers to buy clothing straight off the runway while the show is live.
