Novel reading

In July 2010, Amazon reported that sales of e-books had overtaken hardbacks. What does this mean for publishing? Most people, it seems, don’t read books – or they read what everyone else is reading: 40 per cent of Americans read one book or less in 2009, and one in every 17 books sold in the US since 2006 was by crime novelist James Patterson.

Some predict we can expect the concept of the books to change as they are digitised – novels may become collaborative, “written” with help from readers. Want to change the mood? Or the ending? Go ahead.
