The long debated ban on tobacco branding has moved a step closer, in Australia at least. Two bills passed by the lower house would see branded tobacco banned from shops from 1 January 2012 and in its place uniform olive-green packaging with the name of the brand in small standard type. Graphic health warnings will illustrate the packaging. Similar steps are being considered in the UK, where branded packaging could be outlawed by next April. The move prompts questions about similar action throughout the globe.
