A brave new domain?

The era of .com could be a thing of the past as companies can now create their own urls. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers will this month open registrations for a new wave of domains. This means brands such as Nike could own .nike or Apple could own .apple. Marketing benefits include shorter, more memorable domain names, and it’s also tougher for cybercriminals to hijack the site or traffic of brands with their own domain. But it is not a cheap exercise – and is it really worth it when many of us are hard-wired into typing .com?
