Projects: Have SMART objectives and action plans for who will do what by when to monitor progress.
Diaries: Block some time each day for your own important work to avoid overcrowding your diary with other people’s commitments.
Prioritising: Arrange by importance. Do “must dos” and “should dos” first. Do “nice to dos” last.
Delegation: The secret is to delegate early, brief clearly and review progress early enough to spot and fix problems.
Completion: Finish one task before starting another. Don’t be a task hopper.
Blocks: Handling e-mails, phone calls and other routine tasks in blocks is far more efficient than tackling them as they arise.
Meetings: Lobby for fewer, shorter and more focused meetings for which you’re well prepared and then follow up. Do people need to be there for the whole meeting or just for their “slot”?
Desks: Cluttered desks and poor filing can cost people more than half an hour a day just looking for things. Aim for one task on your desk at a time.
Resources: The more you can demonstrate that you and your team are using your time effectively, the stronger your case for additional resources and the liklihood of you receiving them.
