Managing on reduced resources: Dos and don'ts

Do communicate to staff that you’re running your department in “emergency mode” and what this means for their role.

Do make friends with other departments and help them in their busy periods so they are more likely to assist you when you need it.

Do store nagging thoughts in your Blackberry and deal with the problem later so you don’t waste time worrying now.

Do consider what you can drop, if the pressure is on.

Don't pigeonhole your staff. Now’s the time to see whether they want to expand their role and responsibilities.

Don't let your management of expectations slip. Implement a service level agreement with internal stakeholders so everyone is clear of minimum standards.

Don't lose sight of your filing. It’s hard to work efficiently if you’re disorganised.

Don't ignore rewards for staff just because pursestrings are tight. Extra holiday allowance may be one alternative to a pay rise.

Don't let stress get the better of you. Make a list of what is worrying you, circle those things you can control and find solutions.
