A CIM century: dos and don'ts

Marketing dos

If you want to thrive over a century, then you need to change with the times: CIM started as the Sales Managers’ Association in 1911, became the Incorporated Sales Managers’ Association (ISMA) in 1921, the Institute of Marketing and Sales Management in 1961, and the Institute of Marketing in 1968, before taking on its current title in 1989.

Get royal approval: the ultimate coup is a royal patron – King George VI became CIM’s patron in 1937, followed by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh in 1952.

Go global: ISMA chairman Arthur Chadwick went to the US in 1922 and brokered an alliance with the American Sales Managers Association. CIM now has a formal presence in 11 countries outside the UK.

Marketing dont's

Give up easily: CIM applied for a royal charter in 1936 and 1982 but was turned down, before receiving approval in 1989.
